The Breitling Colt Skyracer

By far one of Breitling’s most accessible watches, the Breitling Colt Skyracer, which premiered at Baselworld earlier this year, is the Manufacturer’s latest foray into the world of practical tool watches.

As one of the world’s foremost makers of “instruments for professionals”, it should come as no surprise to see Breitling once again put their skill and expertise into creating a watch that can enjoy some serious daily wear and tear.

Sized at a generous 45 mm in diameter, the case is constructed from Breitling’s exclusive high-tech black alloy Breitlight, 5.8 times lighter than steel and 3.3 times lighter than titanium, the Colt Skyracer promises ultra-lightness and ultra-robustness. For the wearer who’s is search of a rugged timepiece, this sports watch offers — in addition to its impressive technical look — resistance to scratches, traction, and corrosion, as well as anti-magnetic and hypoallergenic features.

An exemplar aviator’s watch, the Colt Skyracer’s unidirectional rotating bezel enables the wearer to easily track elapsed times via the clarity of its 5-minute interval track. Additionally, to ensure ease of use, the bezel boasts four raised rider tabs at 3, 6, 9, and 12 o’clock, as well as a luminescent pearl at the 12 o’clock mark. In harmony with the case material and bezel, and in keeping with the watch’s technical appearance, a guarded screw-locked crown can be found at 3 o’clock, guaranteeing water resistance to 100 metres.

Protected by the glare-proofed, sapphire crystal, the deep black dial is also consistent with the Colt Skyracer’s resilient design. Exaggerated Arabic numerals in white with a discrete grey shadow stand out against the black watch face, while large white lume-filled hour and minute hands extend from the dial’s central point. An extra-thin seconds hand also appears in white, however, is tipped with a bold red that matches the dial’s inner 24-hour numeric display. This is, after all, a military-inspired watch, so its maintenance of a 24-hour clock can only be expected. Additionally, red adorns the “Colt Skyracer” lettering, which sits above the watch’s “Chronomètre” certification and the indication of its water resistance just above the 6 o’clock mark.

Powering the Colt Skyracer is the Calibre Breitling 74, a movement known as a SuperQuartz. Ten times more accurate than standard quartz movement, this calibre is thermocompensated and is chronometer-certified by the COSC guaranteeing its precision and reliability to a variation of +/- 0.07 seconds per day, unlike standard quartz movements which can vary up to 15 seconds a month. Translated to an annual reading, this means the Colt Skyracer boasts an accuracy of under 10 seconds per year, an improvement on the standard quartz of almost twenty times. The Breitling 74 also offers calendar functionality, which can be viewed via a date window at 3 o’clock, plus it promises an incredible 8-year battery life.

Rounding off the watch’s all-black look is an exclusive rubber strap that features various measurement scales — for instance, centimetres, inches, 1:25,000 and 1:50,000 ratios — that add to the Colt Skyracer’s practicality. Paired with an ingenious removable fastening system, the wearer can quickly remove the section they require for their measurements and then refit just as easily.

Retailing for only $2,770, it is a surprisingly affordable timepiece from a top Swiss watchmaker. With all the Breitling Colt Skyracer offers, watch enthusiasts would do well to pay attention to this entry-level tool watch.
