Now with manufacture movement.

Making its debut at this year’s SIHH, the renewed Luminor Logo collection from Italian luxury watch brand Officine Panerai introduces six new sports watches.
Comprising three iterations of the Luminor Base Logo 3 Days, and three of the Luminor Marina Logo 3 Days, all versions feature the new, hand-wound P.6000 calibre produced at Panerai’s Swiss-based manufacturing facility in Neuchâtel. Retaining that iconic Panerai look, whilst mixing in some contemporary Italian style, the new 2018 Luminor Logo Collection is sure to be hit this year.

Icons that built an empire

The Luminor Base and sister-model Luminor Marina (with additional small second display) have shared a cult following since the 1990s, when Officine Panerai transitioned from military supplier to the public sales market. First created in 1950, the hulking 44mm case dive watches, with a large, cage-like crown guard, were quite unlike anything in the then luxury wristwatch arena. Officine Panerai built a name for itself by ignoring the market and sticking to its unique formula.

Thanks largely to the vision of Panerai’s long-serving CEO, Angelo Bonati, the Luminor Base and Luminor Marina are credited as pioneering the wave of oversized and striking wristwatches, and helped transform the single, Florence-based boutique into a global luxury brand, and a leader in the sports-luxury segment. (The 2018 Luminor Logo Collection is a fitting tribute to Bonati, due to step down as Panerai CEO this year.)

The six new additions to the Luminor Logo Collection are housed in the now familiar, cushion-shaped, standard 44mm case (in polished stainless steel), with protected crown. “Logo” refers to the presence of the OP logo featured at 6 o’clock (the arrows pointing above, in the air, and below, beneath the sea, are a salute to Panerai’s historic beginnings developing instruments for the Italian military).

The Luminor Base Logo 3 Days offers three dial choices – black, black with cyan blue logo, and gloss white. The Luminor Marina Logo 3 Days repeats the selection, with the addition of a small second display at 9 o’clock. The black and white dials are paired with black and light brown calf leather straps respectively. The blue logo versions receive canvas straps that accent the blue in either the stitching, in the case of the Base, or the very stylish colour, for the Marina. Given their dive watch heritage, all six models are of course water resistant to 100m.

Why it’s so attractive

The Luminor Base and Luminor Marina introduced something new in shape, contents and values. Designed for reading underwater, the functional dive watches featured large, black dials (to highlight the Luminor – a self-luminous substance invented by Panerai in 1949) dedicated to legibility. Void of any superfluous details, the minimalist dial with oversized, Arabic numbers at 3, 6, 9 (Luminor Base only), and 12 o’clock has become a timeless classic, that epitomises bold yet refined Italian style.
What’s different (and remarkable) about the Panerai story is it built its success on accessible luxury wristwatches. The Luminor Base Logo 3 Days and Luminor Marina Logo 3 Days (both best-sellers) remain today competitively priced – made even more remarkable by the fact that the 2018 Luminor Logo Collection pairs the iconic dive watches with a manufacture movement.

New in-house movement

Under Bonati’s leadership, one of Panerai’s key objectives has been to reduce reliance on external suppliers and move production in-house. The new P.6000 calibre was completely created by Panerai’s high quality watchmaking Manufacture in Neuchâtel, Switzerland, with an emphasis on strong functionality. The balance wheel, which oscillates at 21,600 alternations per hour, is secured by a full bridge and stops automatically when the crown is pulled out, for greater precision when setting the time. As the name implies, the P.6000 provides a 3-day power reserve.
