Discover TUDOR’s New Releases For 2022
The hits keep on coming this year for TUDOR, with something to suit all tastes. First up is the show-stealing Black Bay Pro, a new model with a dual time zone feature. Meanwhile, the iconic Black Bay GMT model is now also available in a S&G (Steel & Gold) version, featuring warm colours and a vintage touch. Joining it are new versions of the Black Bay Chrono S&G and the TUDOR Royal line. Last but not least, TUDOR is also introducing the Black Bay 31, 36, 39 and 41 S&G models, complete with Manufacture calibres. There’s a lot to unpack from this year’s releases, so pour yourself something nice and get comfortable.
TUDOR Black Bay Pro
Since its founding more than 90 years ago, TUDOR has focused on making accessibly-priced, robust, and above all, functional tool watches. As a result, they have often been called on as the watch of choice by the world’s boldest pioneers and adventurers. When 30 brave explorers embarked on the two-year British North Greenland Expedition to study Arctic ice in 1952, they were each supplied with a TUDOR watch. The first waterproof and self-winding TUDOR watch to be precise, the Oyster Prince model, variants of which the modern-day Black Bay collection draws much of its inspiration.
In 2022, TUDOR continues to build on this legacy with the presentation of a new technical model, complete with its own distinct aesthetic in the Black Bay collection: the Black Bay Pro. A dual-time watch, it stands apart from the existing Black Bay GMT in more ways than one.
Presented in a 39mm steel case with polished and satin finishes, its domed black dial is framed by a 24-hour graduated fixed bezel in satin-brushed steel. Local time is displayed centrally by a short “Snowflake” hand complete with jumping hour complication. In practice, this means the hour can be easily “jumped” forwards or backwards in 1-hour increments depending on the direction of travel. Reference (or “home”) time is indicated by a longer, yellow “Snowflake” hand which completes a lap of the dial every 24 hours. The second time zone is read from the fixed 24-hour bezel. The date, displayed through an aperture positioned at 3 o’clock, is coupled with the local time hand so that when setting the time and passing midnight in retrograde, it instantly jumps to the previous day.
Closer inspection also reveals a slew of new design updates, unique to the Black Bay Pro. For example, the applied hour markers on the dial are made from monobloc luminous ceramic, which is both visually attractive and also substantially increases the luminous surface of the hour markers. Another key feature of the Black Bay collection – the winding crown – has also been reimagined on the Black Bay Pro. Reminiscent of the curves found on the crowns of the brand’s historical technical watches – and designed for maximum grip – this new component is set flush to the middle case band so that its tube is not visible.
As with all TUDOR models in the Black Bay collection, there are several strap options to choose from. A black fabric strap with yellow band, woven in France using a traditional method on 19th century Jacquard looms by the Julien Faure company. A fabric-like hybrid strap in rubber and black leather with a folding clasp. And a full steel bracelet inspired by the folding riveted bracelets made by TUDOR in the 1950s and 1960s. The latter also boasts a new bracelet clasp, with a TUDOR “T-fit” rapid size-adjustment system. The “T-fit” system allows the wearer to quickly and easily carry out a fine, instant adjustment of up to 8mm on the clasp without the need for any tools. Allowing you to get the perfect fit.
Inside the case – which is rated water resistant to 200m – is the TUDOR Manufacture Calibre MT5652 with integrated GMT function. This in-house movement was developed specifically for the Black Bay Pro and draws on the brand’s existing, adaptable architecture, which allows the incorporation of new functions without the need for additional modules. Self-winding, it offers a healthy power reserve of 70 hours.
TUDOR Black Bay GMT S&G
Since its arrival in 2018, the TUDOR Black Bay GMT has been popular with collectors and enthusiasts alike thanks to its practical functionality and eye-catching aesthetic. Capable of displaying three time zones simultaneously, it is distinguished by its bi-colour 24-hour graduated bidirectional rotating bezel. This year a new S&G (Steel & Gold) version joins the line-up, adding a healthy dose of nostalgia to the mix. The satin-brushed steel case remains unchanged at 41mm in diameter but the graduations for the twelve daylight hours on the anodised aluminium bezel insert are gold-coloured on the brown section with the night-time hours on the black section. Gold accents also adorn the dial, while the riveted steel bracelet features yellow gold central links.
TUDOR Black Bay Chrono S&G
Revamped last year, the latest S&G versions of the Black Bay Chrono incorporate an eye-catching sunray satin-finish champagne coloured dial, complete with contrasting matt black sub-counters. The sub-counters have a circular-grained finish and, inspired by the first generation of TUDOR chronographs, feature a 45-minute counter and a date aperture positioned at 6 o’clock. The winding crown and screw-down chronograph pushers are also in yellow gold, as are the centre links on the riveted steel bracelet. Providing the power is the COSC-certified Manufacture Chronograph Calibre MT5813, boasting a 70-hour power reserve and a silicon balance spring.
TUDOR Black Bay 31, 36, 39 and 41 S&G
Demonstrating the collection’s incredible versatility, the case of the Black Bay 31, 36, 39 and 41 S&G models presents a sophisticated, curved vision of the famous Black Bay aesthetic. For the first time, the yellow gold of the bezel and crown feature a high polish finish – previous uses of precious metals in the Black Bay line have been exclusively satin-brushed for a matt finish – clearly distinguishing these models from their tool watch counterparts. All case sizes are available with black or silver dials with a sunray satin-finish. There is also the option of a diamond-set bezel for sizes 31, 36 and 39, a chic detail that enhances the watch’s sparkle on the wrist.
TUDOR Royal 28
With its integrated metal bracelet, notched or diamond-set bezel and automatic movement, the TUDOR Royal range is the epitome of versatile and affordable sport-chic. This year, two new 28mm versions join the collection. One in full steel, the other in steel and yellow gold, both paired with gem-set white mother-of-pearl dials and applied Roman numerals. Each features a fixed bezel set with 60 diamonds and is rated water resistant to 100m.
